Preparing for Surgery
Surgery is a lot less daunting than many people expect. With advances in modern medicine, orthopaedic surgery for foot and ankle conditions are usually performed on a day surgery basis or a short-stay basis.
Your surgeon will ensure that you are well-informed and understand the procedures being perform before you undergo any surgery. Take time to discuss your concerns and ask any questions you may have.
Preoperative Testing
Prior to surgery, you may have to undergo imaging and blood tests. This may include X-ray, MRI, or CT scans. Additionally, if you have pre-existing medical conditions, more tests may be needed. Your surgeon will discuss these with you to determine your individual circumstances. It is important to let your surgeon know if you have any allergies and what medications you are taking.
One to Two Days Before the Surgery
A nurse will contact you one to two days before the day of the surgery to discuss specific preoperative instructions. You will be given information about where you should go and what time you should check in at the hospital.
Day of the Surgery
Please arrive on time on the day of the surgery. Before the procedure, you will have the opportunity to speak with Dr Roderick Kuo. You will also be introduced to the anaesthesiologist who will evaluate your condition and explain anaesthesia with you.
Recovery
After the procedure, you will be sent to the recovery unit and monitored for a period of time to allow the general anaesthesia to wear off and your body vitals to normalise. It is important at this time to report any discomfort, pain, or nausea you may have to the doctors as they can assess your need for painkillers or anti-nausea drugs when you are discharged.
